  • What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a patient-centered system of healthcare where osteopaths try to “Find the Health” in each patient. They use their hands to work on the soft tissues and joints of the body to reduce tension and affect the circulatory, nervous and endocrine systems.

  • What should I wear to my osteopathy appointment?

As you will be asked to undress to your underwear, it is advisable to make sure it is suitable for this occasion. It will make it easier for the osteopath to make a full assessment and to be able to offer you effective treatment.

  • Does osteopathy hurt?

Not usually. The techniques used are gentle and work with the “permission” of the body soft-tissues. Occasionally you might feel a ‘clicking’ sensation as the soft-tissues adjust, but it is not painful – there might be a little lingering soreness for up to 48 hours after the treatment.

  • How many osteopathic treatments do I need?

Usually, it takes between 2 to 6 treatments spread out over 2 to 12 weeks depending on the severity of the problem, its complexity, and what needs to be achieved. The practitioner will always discuss this with you and ensure you are happy with the options and advice offered.

  • Can I have someone with me?

Yes. The treatment room is considered to be a place of absolute privacy and confidentiality between practitioner and patient, but if you would like to have a friend or family member with you, you are welcome to bring them in with you.
